Hmong Americans have historically been underrepresented in higher education and the first-hand knowledge of how to prepare for college, starting as soon as middle school, is not always available. The college prep process involves many steps, from choosing high-school courses to understanding financial-aid rules. Clear information can help students and families connect their goals with opportunities and complete the preparation those opportunities require.
Some consequential choices happen years before senior-year applications. A course in the 9th grade may open the way to a later class. Joining an activity early on can give a student time to develop an interest and take on additional responsibility and leadership roles. Testing, summer opportunities and different education pathways also deserve attention before application season. Learning about an opportunity too late can leave fewer choices.
With information on how the college preparation process works, Hmong students, with the support of their families, teachers, and school counselors, can better position themselves to pursue the many exciting opportunities available to them.
