College planning begins with learning and exploring interests, well before applications. The broad timeline can help you focus your support.
- Middle school. Encourage interests, reading and routines for schoolwork. As high school approaches, look together at the courses available and how the first choices affect later classes.
- Grades 9–10. Help the student build a course plan, try activities and notice what they enjoy learning. Begin talking about careers, education options and costs without expecting a final college or major choice.
- Grade 11. Help make college research, visits and testing plans practical. This is also a useful time to estimate what different colleges might cost your family and prepare for senior-year applications.
- Grade 12. Support application and financial-aid deadlines, then compare actual offers together. After a choice is made, help arrange the payments, travel and other enrollment steps that involve you.
